The SRC Software archive was developed in 2004 as a repository of functional genomics software written for the National Functional Genomics Center. The NFGC focuses on using functional genomics in translational science, bringing basic biological discoveries to the clinic.

The name of the repository was deliberately chosen as src, since it actually has dual meanings (although neither discipline is likely to recognize the other meaning).

  • In computer science, src is typically the abbreviation for source code which is applicable to this code repository.
  • SRC is also a gene name in Homo Sapiens thought to be involved in cancer. From Entrez Gene, it is described as

v-src sarcoma viral oncogene homolog

src is a proto-oncogene that may play a role in cell growth and mutations of which could be involved in malignant progression of colon cancer.

Hence, the name SRC is reminder of the purpose of the software developed - to investigate cancer through the use of technology.
